February Forum Topics

February 26: “The Oscars—Maybe” with Bob Butler                                           Bob Butler’s movie reviews are now found on his website, “Butler’s Cinema Scene.”  It’s mostly about movies but with an extra dollop of straight-forwardness.  Like the past 25 years, Mr. Butler will be at the All Souls Forum this morning of Oscar night.  We can probably expect some extra fun.

February 19: Promised Land, Poverty and Television Reality  with Lewis Diuguid                                                                                                                         Lewis Diuguid, writer, public speaker for local groups and controversial columnist and editorial board member for the Kansas City Star, will speak to the contrasts between successes and disappointments, promised and disillusionment and expectations and realities of Black History in the United States.

February 12: Equity at the Table with Representative Bob Nance          At present, Missourians with past drug convictions are unable to access food stamps, regardless of their ability to meet the usual requirements for doing so.  Thirty-sixth District, Missouri Rep. Bob Nance is sponsoring a Modification of Food Stamp Eligibility for Felons bill which, if passed, will rectify the               regulation that punishes for life even reformed drug offenders.

February 5: Update on Occupy KC with a Panel                                            The Occupy Movement has spread around the country since September, 2011. Occupy KC describes itself as “a movement of citizens who have come together to reclaim our democracy from the 1% who have hijacked it.” A panel of active participants in Occupy KC will discuss their involvement and share their thoughts and hopes for the movement.

February Sermon Topics

February 26: “With Rainbows Streaming Through Our Hands” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons
Much of the work of religious community happens in the deep places of heart and soul and even mind to which we rarely, if ever, have conscious access.  Ironically, careful science is teaching us more

and more about how unscientific human beings usually are.  What are the implications of this awareness for      progressive religion, including Humanism, in general, as well as for our personal spiritual journeys, and our life and work together in community?

February 19: “The Best Revenge” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons
The Talmudic advice that “living well is the best revenge” may not appear to be a theological proposition, but it raises the essential religious question:  what does it mean to live well?  It is true that each of us must find the answer individually for our own lives; the challenge is also collective.  Our  nation is wrestling with it as this election cycle proceeds, and congregational faith  communities must also discover a shared understanding if they are to thrive.

February 13: “Standing on the Side of Love” with Rev. Judith Cady, Anthony Edwards, Carolyn MacDonald & All Souls Choir                      2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of All Souls as a UUA  Welcoming Congregation.  This Sunday, through music and love stories we celebrate the  diversity of families who create our beloved community.
