November 24: “To See the Beauty of the World” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

November 24, 2019 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

At its best, Thanksgiving invites us to pause and find a place of gratitude for the parts of our lives that have been difficult, or different than what we expected, as well as to remember the things and people we have lost, with gratitude for what they have meant to us.  This practice helps to make our lives more meaningful to ourselves, and of greater service to others. The children will help us with a Thanksgiving ritual, we will honor…

December 8: “American Nightmare, Part 3” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

December 8, 2019 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Politicians and others are fond of advocating for everyone to share “the American dream.” We may differ about what that is, exactly, or what it should be, but we seldom question whether a dream is the best format for the ideals toward which we might aspire. Visits to a series of historical sites from the Civil Rights movement of the 20th century in the U.S. lead me to wonder whether the idea of a dream does not require the substance…

December 22: “What You Bring Forth” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

December 22, 2019 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

The conventional interpretation of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her role in the story of the Christmas nativity, encodes a patriarchal culture. What would that story look like, reconsidered by current understandings of women’s power, and the significance of consent? The special offering will benefit UU Service Committee. Click here to watch streaming video on Sunday mornings at 11:15. Click here to find the YouTube channel and archives. UU Service Committee is the recipient of December 22, 2019. Click…

The All Souls heating system is out of commission, and it appears that the needed replacement part will not arrive until Monday, so it will likely be cold in the building this Sunday morning. We will have an abbreviated service for those who want to gather anyway, but if you are sensitive to chills or not feeling well, you may wish to stay home. If you do join us, grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the lobby…

January 12: “Transcending the Supernatural God” with Rev. Jill Jarvis

January 12 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

What if saying “no” to the God of supernatural illusion isn’t the end of the story? We want our lives to matter, as we yearn for comfort in our suffering and hope that justice for all might someday prevail. How might the ancient power and resonance of “God” affirm all we know about modern science, and still provide what we humans need to save ourselves and transform our world? Click here to watch streaming video on Sunday mornings at 11:15.…

January 19: “Emotional Labor” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

January 19 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

One of the manifestations of cultural privilege is the ability to make other people responsible for all the educating, accommodating, and protecting feelings that goes into maintaining a relationship. When a marginalized person asks for a more equal balance, it may feel unreasonably demanding to those who have been historically centered. As we remember the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., how can we better understand what is at stake in this process? The choir will sing, and the…
