Monday, February 20, 7:30 pm, Bragg

Ann Wright spent 29 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of colonel. She then worked for the State Department for 16 years, winning an award for heroism in 1997 for her work evacuating civilians from the civil war in Sierra Leone. In 2001 she helped oversee the reopening of the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. Two years later, she resigned from the State Department to protest the impending U.S. invasion of Iraq. She was arrested for nonviolently blocking the entrance at New York Air Guard’s Hancock Field to urge the grounding of drones flown from there for assassinations and bombing runs in central Asia. She is the co-author of the book Dissent: Voices of Conscience.

Conversations Begin: Proposal to Purchase All Souls/Simpson House Properties

At the Sunday service February 5, All Souls Board President, Diann Spencer, announced that the Kansas City Art Institute had approached All Souls regarding the purchase of the church and grounds. An Exploratory Committee, appointed by the board and comprised of Diane Cassity, Sarah Barlow, Jason Norbury, Don Wakefield and Bill Wright, gathered preliminary information and they recommend that the congregation engage in a dialogue to consider the question of: What type of physical space does the All Souls congregation need to support our mission and who we are as a church? To further this dialogue members will have the opportunity to discuss this issue at Church Chats, Dialogue Circles and conversations.

Two additional committees are being formed to consider this approach. One, a Negotiating Committee, will work with the Kansas City Art Institute and other parties who may be interested in our property. The other committee, a Site Options Committee, will consider what are the most suitable site options for the congregation. If you are interested in serving on either of these committees, please see a member of the Board, the Nominating Committee or the Exploratory Committee.

A Frequently Asked Questions document is available on the members documents section of this website. If you have questions, please contact, Diane Cassity, Exploratory Committee.

February 26: “With Rainbows Streaming Through Our Hands” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons
Much of the work of religious community happens in the deep places of heart and soul and even mind to which we rarely, if ever, have conscious access. Ironically, careful science is teaching us more and more about how unscientific human beings usually are. What are the implications of this awareness for progressive religion, including Humanism, in general, as well as for our personal spiritual journeys, and our life and work together in community?

February 19: “The Best Revenge” with Rev. Kendyl Gibbons
The Talmudic advice that “living well is the best revenge” may not appear to be a theological proposition, but it raises the essential religious question: what does it mean to live well? It is true that each of us must find the answer individually for our own lives; the challenge is also collective. Our nation is wrestling with it as this election cycle proceeds, and congregational faith communities must also discover a shared understanding if they are to thrive.
