The Action Planning Team Report represents many hours of meetings, holding focus groups, reviewing notes, discussion in groups small and large, thinking, and writing. Sixteen people came together and have crafted this report. It was truly a team project.
The team started with Dr. Steinke’s action report, brainstormed actions to take, discussed ideas with focus groups, and then worked to synthesize ideas. This past Sunday, the team and the board met with Dr. Steinke to review and discuss our report, and we made some final changes. The next step is for the the board and congregation to review our report, prioritize actions, and get to work on our ideas.
The best part of the process so far is that it has been a positive way to reframe our conversations and thinking about All Souls. Yes, we have reflected on the past 18 months, but we have done so constructively. Instead of fretting — What is our reputation like now? What minister would ever come to serve us again? — we have asked other, more constructive questions. How can we better define our mission? How should we develop our church’s leadership? What are better ways for us to communicate with each other? What do we want from a minister? What do we owe ministers who serve us?
Thank you, everyone, for your support of this process with Dr. Steinke. His experience and wisdom helped give us a new perspective, helped show us blind alleys to avoid, and helped us understand the turmoil of the past several months in new ways. Thank you to the action team for your many hours of service, and your consistently constructive attitudes and actions. It was a pleasure working with you, and truly affirming for me with regard to All Souls.
The members of this team worked hard, but this is only a beginning. Now we need you, all of the members of All Souls, to help put these ideas and projects into practice. First, please read our report. Then plan to attend one of two church chats: Sunday Feb. 27 at 12:30 or Wed. March 2 at 6:30 pm. Child care will be available for the Sunday chat, and we’ll have snacks in the lobby that day. Come with a spirit of curiosity and energy, ready to share your comments and questions, and, of course, to sign up for a task force or committee.
