As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of amending the Kansas City human rights ordinance to add sexual orientation as a protected category, we also recognize two decades of All Souls Church identifying as a Welcoming Congregation. The political process in our nation may be polarized by extremists, but an objective look at history shows reason for hope and continuing action.

“Animal Factories, Latest Poster Child for a Dumb Technology” with Craig Volland

Technologist Craig Volland has addressed social and regulatory issues with large livestock feeding operations since 1996 for the Kansas Sierra Club and others.  He will discuss the fundamental contradictions of the underlying technology, called intensive confinement, and compare it to other troubled technologies that have boomed and faded during America’s Post-WWII industrial era.

“How to Help Low-Income People Care about the Environment” with Richard Mabion

Richard Mabion is a Principal at J. Gordon Community Development, Inc. and a grass-roots environmental activist in Kansas City, Kansas. He will present his philosophy of environmental organizing among low-income communities and will recount his experiences with an ongoing project for energy efficiency and conservation in KCK. “A Purpose-Driven Congregation” with Lay leaders, children and youth

Later today, our congregation will hold it’s 145th Annual Meeting, during which we will decide whether to adopt a new Mission Statement. Does a congregation need a Mission Statement? Individuals are told to live with intentionality, but do congregations also need to lead purpose-driven lives? Does this proposed Mission Statement provide a useful guide for our church?

Memorial Day marks the start of the summer season with a time of recollection and thoughtfulness, remembering those we have lost to death, as individuals and as a community, during the past year, and how those departed remain with us in spirit. The Choir will sing.

“Issues, Values and Art” with Julian Zugazagoitia

Dr. Julian Zugazagoitia became the director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on the first of September 2010. An international scholar with a passion for the arts, he has journeyed around the globe as a  consultant, curator, and director for renowned museums and organizations such as UNESCO. Through his work, he’s come to appreciate the significance and value of art to the human condition.
