Guest speakers typically focus on issues of political, social justice, moral, educational and artistic significance. Each presentation is followed by questions and discussion.
September 5: Labor Day: Challenging the Anti-Labor Worker Agenda with Judy Ancel. Since the 1970's, working people have seen their standard of living and the quality of their jobs decline. Judy Ancel, Director of the Institute for Labor Studies at UMKC, will discuss possible agendas behind the off-shoring of jobs, the unequal tax system and the decline of unions. How are people convinced to support these policies, and more importantly, what are working people doing to challenge them?
September 12: Beyond Petroleum and Coal with Toby Grotz. This is the first in a five part series on Energy. Toby Grotz is an electrical engineer who has prospected for oil overseas and helped design power plants in the U.S. He will discuss why we need to design a whole new energy system that runs on renewable energy well before we run out of fossil fuels.
September 19: The Pros and Cons of Going Electric with a 3 person panel. The second in our energy series. How will we get off our addiction to petroleum and reduce greenhouse gasses? Plug-in electric cars and gas-electric hybrid cars may be the wave of the future. Are we ready for them? Can they significantly reduce carbon emissions? Reps from the Sierra Club, EnergizeKC and the Metropolitan Energy Center will seek to answer.
